Open Educational Resources: Open Pedagogy, Universal Design, and Inclusivity

Open Pedagogy

What happens when we center students as content creators? How can we go beyond lowering the cost of textbooks to involving students in knowledge creation and curation?

From Robin DeRosa and Rajiv Jhangiani's article on the Open Pedagogy Notebook:

"If we merge OER advocacy with the kinds of pedagogical approaches that focus on collaboration, connection, diversity, democracy, and critical assessments of educational tools and structures, we can begin to understand the breadth and power of Open Pedagogy as a guiding praxis."

Culturally Responsive Teaching

How does teaching and learning change when students truly see themselves in their course work? Can we identify barriers students face in the content of our courses?

From the PCC Library guide to CRT:

Culturally responsive teaching is defined as "using the cultural knowledge, prior experiences, frames of reference, and performance styles of ethnically diverse students to make learning encounters more relevant to and effective for them” (Gay, 2010).

Some of the characteristics of culturally responsive teaching include:

  • Communication of high expectations
  • Learning within the context of culture
  • Student-centered instruction
  • Teacher as facilitator

Universal Design

How does universal design relate to the open education movement? How can we apply universal design in the context of our course materials?
