- Rad Scientist, Season 3A KPBS Explore series. Season 3 is centered on Black scientists, from graduate students to faculty to those who have left the ivory towers. They study bug microbiomes, autism, neural prosthetics and more. But they also discuss how racism has impacted their scientific journey. The final episode examines the root of inequity in STEM academia and what can be done moving forward to ensure a more diverse and inclusive ecosystem where science can serve everyone.
Antiracism in STEM
Below is a selection of antiracist resources for educators and students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Each source is an invitation to think critically, reflect deeply, and to advocate for racial equity within these disciplines.
This is a work in progress, and we welcome your ideas and input. Please reach out if there are resources you would like to see on this page:

- Black, Brown, Bruised by Ebony Omotola McGeePublication Date: 2020Drawing on narratives from hundreds of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous individuals, Ebony Omotola McGee examines the experiences of underrepresented racially minoritized students and faculty members who have succeeded in STEM, and advocates for structural and institutional changes.
- Critical Research on Sexism and Racism in STEM Fields by Ursula Thomas (Editor); Jill Drake (Editor)Publication Date: 2016This book investigates the bias, stereotyping, and repression experienced within STEM-based career fields, emphasizing the struggle felt by women within politics, education systems, business environments, STEM careers, as well as issues with advocacy and leadership.
- Diversifying STEM by Ebony O. McGee (Editor, et al)Includes a wide array of perspectives and the voices. The essays cover three main areas: the widely-held ideology that science and mathematics are “value-free,” which promotes pedagogies of colorblindness in the classroom as well as an avoidance of discussions around using mathematics and science to promote social justice; how male and female students of color experience the intersection of racist and sexist structures that lead to general underrepresentation and marginalization; and recognizing that although there are no quick fixes, there exists evidence-based research suggesting concrete ways of doing a better job of including individuals of color in STEM.
