Course Specific Research Support for BI 212: Home
Principles of Biology I course outcomes related to research skills:
- BI 212 CCOGAssess the strengths and weaknesses of scientific studies in molecular biology and plant and animal anatomy and physiology and critically examine the influence of scientific and technical knowledge of plant and animal anatomy and physiology on human society and the environment.
Develop and effectively communicate an evidence-based position on issues in molecular biology and plant/animal anatomy and physiology while considering the ethical implications for a diverse community.
Other indicators of required research or information seeking:
From the Outcome and Assessment Strategies:
- scientific papers that follow standard scientific format presenting independent investigations and may include peer-review(s)
- scientific article critiques
Bridging competencies to support research and information seeking at this level:
- Differentiate magazine from journal articles
- Identify scholarly sources on the open web (web-based journals)
Corresponding research and information seeking outcomes for BI 211
- Access primary literature in biology
- Select and evaluate journal articles for relevance to topic
- Critique scientific studies for strengths and weaknesses
- Identify research questions to be addressed
Librarian Instructional Objectives:
1. Evaluate peer-reviewed journal articles from library databases and specialized search engines for usefulness and authority
2. Estimate the effectiveness of search terms for locating relevant journal articles
3. Use “cited by” tools to gather a list of scholars engaged in the same conversations and compare their points of departure from each other
4. Choose research questions related to topics in the discipline
