African American Men's Scholar Program
Cascade’s African American Men's Scholar Program seeks to escalate persistence and college completion, improve transfer rates, and increase degree attainment for African American men. This program provides individual and small group academic guidance/coaching to 10 Mentor Scholars throughout the academic year. Those Scholars benefit by receiving mentoring from African American male professionals in the PCC and Portland community. Additionally, each of the 10 Mentor Scholars will Mentor three first year African American students.
Mentors develop leadership skills through enrollment in the tuition free course, ED 161: Leadership through Advocacy and Representation. This course places an in-depth emphasis on developing tangible skills and professional mentoring. The class helps Mentors strengthen communication and problem solving skills as well as developing the competencies necessary to thrive as a member of a team.
