Researching Indigenous shapers of culture
For this assignment, you will be identifying an Indigenous artist or cultural producer to study.
Here are some places to start, collected by the PCC Writing Department and PCC Librarians. Portland-area resources are marked with an asterisk (*).
News, blogs, and media:
- Indian Country Today -- reputable source of Native news; formerly print and online but now online only.
- Native America Calling -- daily hourlong national broadcast, plus podcast archive
- *Rose City Native Radio -- KBOO community radio (90.7 FM in Portland, or KBOO on TuneIn app); local show, airs Thursday nights 6-7 pm, or stream on your own through the website
- Native Appropriations Blog -- a much-respected news source produced by Dr. Adrienne Keene (Cherokee Nation), a professor of Ethnic Studies at Brown University

- American Indians in Children's Literature -- a resource curated by Dr. Debbie Reese (Nambe Pueblo), and an excellent source for information about the representations of Native people in children's and young adult literature written by both Native and Non-Native writers.

- Matika Wilbur TED talks -- Wilbur (Swinomish and Tulalip) is a photographer who's on a mission to document all Native Nations. Her TED talks are transformative for many viewers.
- All My Relations podcast -- Matika Wilbur and Adrienne Keene together (if you like Matika and Adrienne's work on their own, then you might want to listen to them in conversation!)
- Wendy Red Star -- feminist and visual artist; a few pieces on view at the Portland Art Museum

- The Sioux Chef -- a team of chefs, ethnobotanists, artists, foragers and food lovers led by Sean Sherman working on revitalization of indigenous cuisine and food sovereignty

- Rumble: the Indians Who Rocked the World -- 2017 documentary about Indigenous popular music; online through PCC through 2/21/2020 and also on DVD.
